Food weighing in Finland

We did a food waste project in our school. After all the students in our school had eaten their daily lunch the students were told to bring their food waste to the buckets in the canteen. We measured the amount of food waste each class left. Class 2A had the least amount of waste (0,564 grams per student in the class, 14,1 grams in total) and class 2-3e had the biggest amount of waste (58,75 grams per student in the class, 470 grams in total). After this the winner got a prize and we gave ice cream to each student in class 2A.

The amount of food waste for the whole school was 7,9 kilos. So in average, each student put 17,2 grams of food in the food waste bucket.

So here are the results:

Weighing of leftovers in school of Alovė

REPORT
Weighing of leftovers in the canteen of the lower secondary school of Alovė,
22 January, 2015

Pupils of the 7th grade did a survey about food waste in the school canteen. They also interviewed participants of the project “Teenagers being innovators” about food waste and leftovers in their homes.
All students answered that there sometimes are leftovers of soup after dinner at their homes but these leftovers are usually given to animals, mostly dogs.  Leftovers of food are very seldom thrown away at home.
Results of the survey about food waste in the school canteen

·
·         There were 77 pupils who had lunch on the 22nd of January
·         There were 4.7 kg of leftovers: soup, vegetables, drink.
Every pupil left about 0.06 kg of food or drink. They leave garnish, vegetables, soup and drink more often than meat, sausages or pancakes.
·         Pupils like pancakes and schnitzels but they don’t like goulash very much.
·         The cooks of the canteen noticed that pupils who have to pay for lunch usually don’t leave leftovers.
·         However, pupils from social supported families leave more food leftovers as they don’t have to pay for lunch.
·         Older pupils more often leave food leftovers than younger ones as they buy some snacks in the shop before lunch in the school canteen.
To sum up, there are always food leftovers in our school canteen. The situation could be better if pupils wouldn’t buy snacks in the local shop before the lunch break.

Food waste. Weighing of leftovers in Vändra Gymnasium on Thursday, 22 January 2015.

Our school has two separate eating groups during two breaks.
In the first group there were students from forms 1-7,  total number was 162 students. For the first group there was made 104,3 kg of food. There were 3,5 kg of leftovers.. So every student threw away about 0,02 kg of their food.
In the second group there are 138 students from forms 8-12. On 22 January 2015 only 108 student had their lunch.Their food weight was 93,1 kg.
19 teachers also ate in the school canteen during the second shift and their food weight was 12,8 kg. Altogether there were 25 kg of leftovers during the second lunch break. It turned out that older students and teachers throw away approximately 0,1 kg of their lunch food.
To sum up, the weight of leftovers was 28,5 kg. During the observation it turned out that students mostly threw away potatoes and apple hearts. Other students who do not participate in our project did not know anything about the food weighing.

Helping ‘Julehjælpen’
‘Julehjælpen’ is Danish for ‘The Christmas Help’. It’s an organization, which  provides boxes with all you need to celebrate Christmas, to less fortunate families.
This year, we wanted to help them, so we gathered all our old toys, repaired any damage and washed it, before wrapping it.
(Josephine and Julie sorting the teddybears)
We didn’t just give away our own toys, but many other student came down, and gave us their old toys. When we were almost done with wrapping and we thought we could relax, a mom rolled up in her minivan, and gave us eight sacks and one big box of toys. That meant more sorting and wrapping for us.

A few weeks after, we went to the location where Julehjælpen handed out the boxes. They were a bit surprised over the amount of gifts we had gathered.
At ‘the handout’ people would just come for their box, not knowing anything about our gifts for their children. A mom started crying, but it was tears of joy. She didn’t know, that she would get so many gifts for her children.
The employees were very friendly. They offered us lemonade, tea and cookies, while constantly thanking us for what we had done.
We didn’t think we’d have enough presents for everyone, but when we were done, we had to give almost 12 presents for ONE FAMILY! We still had gifts to spare, so everybody had a merry Christmas!
